This is beyond mind-boggling. It defies normal credulity.

They sure deserve to lose $1.1 million. I have no sympathy for them. This was so stupid. So, stupid. What baffles me is how did a couple this stupid have this much money on them.

I am sure this story is not complete. IF you move this money money from a retirement account there are SIGNIFICANT tax consequences. Plus, I am not sure what is meant by wiring ‘a home equity line of credit‘.

It doesn’t make sense. They would first have to have set up the wire transfer. There is some verification. Plus, with this amount of money Fidelity would have had a ‘look’. I KNOW. I have been a Fidelity customer for 35+ years. Fidelity is excellent.

IF this story is as reported this couple was just plain, dumb stupid. They deserved to be screwed. Hey, I am a senior too … {SMILE}

Yes, a few years ago, a friend of mine (at the time) got conned into paying $440 online, to a ‘Microsoft Engineer’ for fixing a major bug on his PC. He was in his late 60s. He panicked when he saw the scary RED BOX pop-up. {Yes, he probably was surfing for porn!} He called, he got ripped off. But, it was ONLY $440 (& to be fair, he is quite rich & $440 is mere bagatelle to him}. I kept on saying why didn’t he ask me first. {I do have a relative who always checks with me when he gets dubious messages or calls. We haven’t got ripped off yet.}

This story just disgusts me. NOT because of the scammers, BUT because people are SO, SO, SO STUPID.

{Please, there is NO POINT making fun that they are a couple of Maine! Appears that they must be from around ‘Portland‘. Portland as far as I am concerned is a part of Connecticut!}
