Volunteering at these games was the MOST WONDERFUL thing I had done in ages. It was so REWARDING. What a GREAT bunch of people, especially the kids. Wow. The kids were phenomenal — so polite, so enthusiastic, so engaging, so cooperative. I just couldn’t get enough. And the other volunteers. It was awesome & humbling.

As some of you know, I am no stranger to volunteering & putting service above self. What struck me the most was that there were NO egos, no politics! The volunteers were there for the games & THE KIDS. That is all that counter. I met & interacted with some wonderful people. WOW. Made my day.

Yes, I have already signed up for 2 more days of volunteering for them. Will do MORE if I can.

This is GREAT CAUSE. If you can, you should help out too.

So, it wasn’t that far back — just 6-years, i.e., 2017.

A 6-year gap between Christmas falling on the same day of the week is fairly common.

The gaps, as you can see from the 2nd diagram above, can be: 5, 6 or 11.

It all depends on how LEAP YEARS intervene. You can also see that from the 2nd diagram. If there is only ONE LEAP year between the years, it is 6 days apart. More than one & actual leap years complicate matters to give us either the 5-year or 11-year gap.

IF you are into calendaring (as I am) you will immediately seize upon that ’11’. 11 is significant. It is 7+4, i.e., the number of days in a week (7) & the number of years between leap years.

Note that we will have a 11-year gap before Christmas again falls on a Sunday.

Merry Christmas.

Last Time Hanukkah Began On The Evening Of November 28 Was In 1975 — 46 Years Ago!

Wow. Pretty special. There will be nearly two generations who have never celebrated the start of Hanukkah on November 28.

I maintain a ‘dates’ Excel spreadsheet — one sheet with all the dates of Hanukkah from 1900 to 2099. So, I can do these lookups.

Per that spreadsheet, & as you can see from the figure above, the earliest day that Hanukkah can begin seems to be November 27. It was such 8 years ago in 2013. But, the early dates seem to be rare. That would explain the lengthy 46 year gap. So, this is nearly as far apart that Hanukkah can be from Christmas. Closer to Thanksgiving than Christmas.

It will be 30 years before it happens again.

As to when it last started on a Sunday night is much closer at hand. We only have 7 days of the week that it can rotate through. So, the gaps can never get too large. So, we had Sunday starts both in 2019 & 2018.
