To see the downed building, one that I had been under just 4-days earlier, was quite the shocker.

It had been quite the brutal storm but seeing this was really sobering.

I rarely, if ever, go to the ‘dump’ (i.e., recycling center) on a Friday. Monday is my day to make my weekly trip to the dump.

But, we had the storm on Friday. We were without power. So not that much I could do, productively, around the house. I needed MORE gas for the generators. We had quite a build up of CARDBOARD with all of the Christmas buying. PLUS, I knew we would have more after Christmas on Sunday. So, I decided I would do a quick run to the dump, get rid of all the cardboard & other garbage & then grab more gas on the way back.

Wow.

There was an electronic display board close to the entrance saying something along the lines of: “We will reopen 12/26”. But, nothing that said it was closed per se. Then I saw the collapsed building & another sign saying “Road Closed”. But, I could see vehicles ahead using the dump facility — as opposed to the recycling center. So, I weaved myself up there & people were using it. So, I got rid of what I needed to get rid of.

As to the building I don’t think it was ALL just wind. I think there must have been a LOT of snow on it from the previous storm. I know that we had a lot on our roof & I was worried what the rain would do to it. So, I raked off some from the bottom to give the rain a chance to rain. Worked. Our roof was snow free within a couple of hours.

Yes, that side of the building is really a pavilion — a roof, on supports, without any walls. So, the wind can howl through it. But, I doubt it was the wind alone.

Our recycling center, for reasons that some of us know (rather amusingly), REFUSES to have cameras installed though there was money allocated for that. So, in the absence of cameras we have no video footage to show what happened. Maybe NOW they will get around to installing cameras. SMILE.

Blowing A Gale In Acadia (Video), Last Thursday, February 17, 2022 — 52F (11C), No Rain But A Brutal Wind.

YouTube video of the wind blasts below.

Interesting day at Acadia. Warm. Like a Spring day. No rain. Just a howling wind — more inland than at the coast.

I had been monitoring the weather, diligently. So, none of this came as a surprise. The 50F temps. were a joy.

I ended up hiking 16 miles (in total) that day. SMILE. Did all of my usuals: viz., Ocean Drive/Path, Jordan Pond, Eagle Lake, Duck Brook, Northeast Harbor, Ship Harbor, Bass Harbor etc.

The video above was at Eagle Lake. I don’t like shooting videos. Just not my thing. I am a photographer, not a videographer. But, I had to shoot this. Hope you like it. I sure had fun. Couple of times I wished (only half-heartedly) that I wasn’t as light as I am now. It would have helped if I was carrying 20 or 30 more pounds.

My 15-year old daughter likes going out, by ‘car‘, at night, during storms. So, I indulged her last night. It wasn’t too bad outside. It was raining, but not that hard & there was no wind. She likes going down country dirt roads with overhanging trees. We did that.

On the news I had seen some pictures of overflowing dams. I was familiar with this dam in Pittsfield. I wasn’t sure whether it would be lit — or whether the illuminations were reserved for ‘Christmas’. It was only about 8-miles away. So, I gave it a shot. We got there just around 11pm. The town was asleep. We had the dam all to ourself.

When Local Media Try To Sensationalize A Story By Disingenuously Adding ‘Mystery’ To The Title.

Kind of cute. Making it out that nobody knows what this thing is. Sure looks like a crayfish to me. Not a mystery at all. Just something awaiting confirmation.

This happened real close to us — during the storm I posted about yesterday.

They mention two lakes as the possible source of this ‘creature’, viz. Locke Lake & Halfmoon Lake. The latter is our lake. I have spent a lot of time on that lake, albeit never diving it per se. I have never seen any crayfish. That is not to say that there couldn’t be any in that lake. It is of fairly decent size.

It is just the ‘mystery animal’ part in the title that tickled me. I first assumed that this was going to be an unknown species of animal. Not just another common or garden variety crayfish.

That is local media for YOU. Smile. They have to get the clicks — by hook or by crook.

It was quite the storm. Very fast moving but INTENSE as it passed. Haven’t seen anything of that intensity in some time. It was not a mini- nor micro-tornado, but it was strong.

A 1.5-miles from us they had an even stronger microburst. As I write this 28-hours later they are still trying to clear the trees from that stretch of road. I walked up there this morning with Rowen. Didn’t try to get up real close.

At 6pm today I heard that the road was still not open. Wow. That is bad. This could have been us! The 2008 tornado went right by us — maybe 1/4-mile away. This microburst was not that far away from the path of that tornado. Has to be a wind corridor. Yes, that we have two lakes side-by-side, so to speak, might have something to do with that.

As I write, close to midnight it is raining & has been for hours. Not hard. But enough. It did not stop me from getting in my 11pm 1-mile walk. I, however, did not take the dogs. They would have got soaked. I managed to stay dry. Got some decent rain gear. SMILE.

Well, from what I see, we have another 10-days of ‘interesting’ weather ahead. I will keep you posted.
