I Am Chagrined That An Ex-President Would Wish Fellow Americans A ‘HAPPY Memorial Day’.

This is one of my pet peeves. ‘Memorial Day‘ is not meant to be a ‘happy holiday‘. I write about this most years. All holidays, by default, don’t have to be happy. Jews understand this real well. Many of their holidays are to commemorate events that were far from happy. We also have ‘Good Friday‘. ‘Happy‘ is NOT an appropriate greeting for Good Friday. It is for ‘Easter‘, 3-days later.

Memorial Day is a day for reflection, remembrance, honor, respect & humility.

I bitched about this 5-years ago (in my now defunct ‘Old Blog’). But, he still persists. Amazing.

Here is a CLASSIC example, on ‘Facebook’ today.

NOT cricket.

‘Memorial Day‘ is NOT a celebratory holiday though most Americans do not appear to appreciate that. Many, especially the young, think of it in terms of cookouts, going to the beach & the start of Summer. A shame. It is also not a generalized holiday to remember, memorialize & honor all departed.

It is a VERY specific & special holiday.

Memorial Day (originally known as Decoration Day) is a U.S. Federal Holiday for mourning the U.S. military personnel who have died while serving in the United States armed forces.

That is it. Period. Nothing more. Nothing less.

For honoring & mourning those that died IN SERVICE.

It is NOT meant to be a HAPPY DAY.

It is meant to be a sober day! Yep …. (SMILE).

Yes, this is one of my yearly pet peeves. People just not appreciating what Memorial Day is all about.

A couple of years ago we even had a draft-dodging U.S. President that wished the Nation a ‘Happy Memorial Day’! What can I say! NO. Happy is NOT appropriate. Think about it.

Last Time ‘Memorial Day’ Fell On May 29, As It Is This Year (i.e., 2023), Was 6-Years Ago, In 2017.

‘Memorial Day‘ is ALWAYS on the LAST Monday of May.

It can fall between May 25th & May 31st.

So, this year’s May 29 is (still) kind of in the middle.

The last time it fell on May 29 was 6 years ago in 2017.

6 (or 5) year gaps are the norm for this type of repeating holiday given that we have 7 days in a week. So, we essentially cycle through the week. Leap years mess this up & we then get a 11 year gap. That happened prior to 2017. So, the previous May 29 was in 2006. The next one will be in 2028.

‘Happy’ Is NOT An Appropriate Greeting For ‘Memorial Day’.
