For somebody who watches movies near everyday, I am NOT a BIG fan of individual actors or actresses. I rarely have any interest of them OUTSIDE of the movies they appeared in. This infuriates my family, but I don’t know the names of most (supposedly) famous thespians. No interest. Occasionally, I might recognize one in another movie — & then struggle to work out what the other movie was. Basically, I like movies but have little (or no) interests in the people who make it possible. Hey, just another of my fobiles.
‘Donald Sutherland‘, however, is an exception. I know him — his name & what he looks like. I recognize him, by name, in movies without having to drive folks nuts by asking ‘who is he … I have seen him in something before‘.
I was a BIG fan of ‘M*A*S*H’. So, I am sure I got to know him then, though he was very young at the time. But, I am fairly sure that it was ‘Citizen X’ that imprinted him in me. Have you seen it. You really must. I would rank it as one of the most powerful I have seen. Riveting. Mesmerizing. I know I have watched it at least 3 times.
I am sorry to see him go. I liked him. My type of guy. Kind of pseudo-British in that he was Canadian. I think that played a role.
