I discovered Carl Goodman’s ’20/20′, serendipitously, on Amazon’s ‘Audible‘ PLUS CATALOG. Given my obsession with vision, I couldn’t overlook that title. I am glad I looked into it. As you can see above, I thoroughly enjoyed the book — especially since I too had had two fancy toric lenses implanted in my eyes just a year ago. Via the elusive magic of Twitter, I was even fortunate to interact with the author, Carl Goodman. We are both brits, and we both like to write. That was a good start.

I enjoyed 20/20 so much that I, of course, went looking for the sequel — & that was ‘Lifesign’. They both follow a similar template. The indestructible, near Super-Womanish ‘DI Eva Harris‘, in both stories, is tackling two parallel investigations: one a massive, ongoing Russian drug cartel & the other a series of murders connected with a cutting-edge development in medical science. In 20/20 it was implanted lenses. In Lifesign it is CRISPR-based gene manipulation to achieve ‘senescence therapy’ — i.e., extending lifespan by slowing/halting cell aging. In both instances it is genuine, topical, cutting edge stuff.

Mr. Goodman, who claims to be a graphics designer (in an interview I found), does a prodigious amount of research into a bewildering array of topics to make his tales riveting, thought-provoking & educational. This is when it struck me that he was as good, if not better, than ‘Dan (Da Vinci Code) Brown‘. Dan Brown (a fellow New Hampshirite) changed my life. Mr. Goodman, though he has enchanted it, has NOT changed my life — at least as yet. So, I don’t go around lightly making comparisons to Dan Brown. Less than a handful of folks have changed my life — & I value them greatly.

But, to be fair, Mr. Goodman’s capacity to tackle a huge variety of different topics — ranging from guns to gene editing, cyber hacking to cyborgs, and transhumanism to therapeutics — & synthesize them in a way that a lay person can understand is humbling. Dan Brown was good at that. So is Carl Goodman. And that is where I think his genius lies. He also tells a good story — simply, but with aplomb.

Yes, cold hearted critics will find ‘holes’ in his story & styles. So, what? The Da Vinci Code had huge holes & even I found some. That is why it is fiction.

One interesting thought. I LISTENTED to both books. As I have already noted listening to a book is profoundly different to reading it. The narrator of this book, Louise Brealey, was also brilliant. She has to get a fair amount of credit for making this yarn so easy on the ears.

All-in-all, Car Goodman has impressed me much. He makes me smile — especially when he talking about programming & IT stuff. SMILE. I had not heard the word ‘heuristic‘ in decades! Wow. It took me back to the 1970s. DI Eva Harris is a recent British computer science graduate. She did a stint in Southampton. I, in 1974, was in the first batch graduates to get a degree in ‘Computer Technology’ (from Swansea). I lived in ‘West End’ (a suburb of Southampton) while working for IBM at Hursley. Yes, his stories take me back. He has Eva visiting a surgeon, early morning, in Harley St. I did that in the late 1970s — to see an eye specialist. So, yes, I am also kind of biased. But, Carl Goodman — LIVES UP TO his name.

I have really, really lucked out over the last 15 months with my ‘Plus’ subscription to Amazon’s amazing ‘Audible’ audiobook service. I have got to listen to some stunning works & get to know some brilliant authors, well worth knowing.

‘Audible’ is the nearest thing I have come to, in 65-years as an avid, daily reader of books, to belonging to ‘anything‘ that recommends titles that might interest I. Prior to that it has always been kind of pot luck.

I, as I had with ‘Carl Goodman‘, ‘Catherine Ryan Howard‘ & ‘Rose Tremain‘ (just to mention but three), only discovered Bernice McFadden thanks to coming across her in the Audible ‘Plus Catalog’. I title I initially came across was ‘Tisoy‘ (slang for a mixed Filipino). I do pick books by their cover! I am not embarrassed to admit that. In this case the cover picture portrayed ‘Monument Valley’ (which I have visited 3 times) & an Arizona cactus. That caught my eye. Then I saw the reviews that accused it of being racist. How could I resist. I was intrigued. I downloaded it … The rest is history.

I just loved ‘Tisoy’. Was CRUSHED when it finished so quickly. Wanted it to go on and on. That is my main criticism of this book. It was too short. Yes, there are some improbable (& not properly thought out) scenarios BUT I can forgive those because the rest of the book was so good. SO, GOOD.

So, I went looking for other titles by her. That is how I found ‘The Book of Harlan’. I am sure glad, yet again, that I downloaded this book. WOW. What a story & furthermore, so WELL written. She writes like an angel.

Yes, I already have another of her titles downloaded. I plan to read/listen to a lot of her works. I think she is beyond gifted. I am glad. I wish her all the best. I hope she goes from strength to strength.

I am LISTENING to this book, riveted & in absolute awe, on ‘Audible‘ during my daily, 2-hour amble in the morning. WOW. WOW! What a book.

I happened to see it on the Audible ‘Plus Catalog’ (i.e., ‘free’ depending on your Audible membership) & the title ’20/20′ caught my eye. Cataract surgery, this time last year, & that disturbing ‘vitreous detachment‘ on my left eye 3-weeks ago. Anything & everything to do with VISION is of interest to I. This book, actually, does go into a fair amount of detail about cataract lens replacement. I, however, do not think that the ‘Fresnel’ lens he talks about is the same as the Toric lenses I had. I am, however, familiar with Fresnel lenses thanks to my interest in lighthouses.

The story is very clever & gripping. I haven’t finished listening to it, BUT I wanted to give you all a heads up. Brilliant. Just brilliant.

However, what is more amazing is the author, ‘Carl Goodman’. Don’t know him. But, would like to. I think he, like I, is a Brit. But, unlike I, he is a bloody genius. The variety of expertise that he tackles with aplomb, at a degree of detail that is astounding, should leave you in awe. Yes, given my computer background I can follow, appreciate & enjoy all of the computer related jargon — including SQL. But, he covers so many other topics with the same amount of depth & detail. WOW. I am in awe.

I can’t BELIEVE that this book is NOT available as a paperback. I was going to buy a copy for my BRILLIANT cataract surgeon, Dr. Theodor Sauer, as a Christmas present. Maybe I can convince the author to do the paperback. I could even do it for him — given that I can publish paperbacks in my sleep.

Anywho. GREAT BOOK. Check it out. Amazing author. Check him out. I have already downloaded his other book.
