Talk about serendipity. I found it at a yard sale in ‘Alton‘ (NH) today. Alton, where I live, was having it annual, town-wide yard sale. I only went at the spur of the moment. Then I FOUND this! What were the chances.
From 1890. That is NOT stamped on the pitcher.
The rest of the data, i.e., made in ‘Vienna’, Austria — for C.L. Adams of Lubec is (as you can see from the photo) on the back.
The (v. nice couple) selling it were antique collectors. They had taken notes from a seller at an estate sale. That is where the 1890 comes from.
I checked the Lubec 1910 census. Found a number of families with that name. Maybe some folks in Lubec will know who this is. Neat.
Given that the sellers were into antiques, it was priced as an antique — as opposed to yard sale prices. {SAD}. So, it was more expensive than I could afford, BUT I decided I will sacrifice. So, just 1.5 meals a day for the rest of the month — & I will have to water down my wine even further.
I am NOT going to keep it. In my dotage I have STOPPED collecting (books and magazines to do wit trains (& sometimes ‘Acadia’) being the only exceptions).
NO, I will NOT be donating it to one of the two ‘museums’ in Lubec.
Instead, I plan to give it to someone who I THINK my ‘treasure it’ and hold on to it for a few years.
With luck, in a few weeks I might be able to post a picture of it in its NEW HOME in Lubec. SMILE.
