Popes go to circuses or have circus performers come to the Vatican. Nothing new there. Perfectly fine — and I say that as one who also loves circuses and tries to go to as many as he can (& as some of you know I have upcoming tickets for TWO).
But, there appears to have been an ulterior motive for the 87-year old Francis visiting THIS circus. He was going to honor an 81-year-old non who serves the LGBTQ community. Again nothing wrong with that other than it confuses everybody, especially the LGBTQ community, NO END — and angers the conservatives, especially the U.S. Catholics.
I gather that feathers, predictably, have already been ruffled. That was to be expected. The Pope WANTED that. It was meant to be provocative. He succeeded. SMILE.
That is all. My job, i.e., bringing this to your attention, is done.
