Cardinal resignations (i.e., retirement): As of Feb. 2018, per Francis, all cardinals, whether diocesan or curial, must submit their resignation upon turning 75 (or earlier, if they (or others) think it prudent). It is up to the pope as to when he will accept the resignation.

September 28, 2024: Angolan Cardinal Alexandre do Nascimento (99), Archbishop Emeritus of Luanda passed away Angola. He was created in Feb. 1983 by John Paul II. Though he was a cardinal for 41 years he never got to attend a conclave! He is the first cardinal to die in 121 days.

Sept. 26, 2024: ❽ French Cardinal Jean-Pierre Bernard Ricard (80), Archbishop Emeritus of Bordeaux, turned 80 & as such ceased to be a cardinal elector. He was created in March 2006 by Benedict XVI.

Sept. 15, 2024: ❽ Italian Cardinal Mauro Piacenza (80), Major Penitentiary Emeritus, turned 80 & as such ceased to be a cardinal elector. He was created in November 2010 by Benedict XVI.

August 5, 2024: ❽ Tanzanian Cardinal Polycarp Pengo (80), Archbishop Emeritus of Dar-es-Salaam, turned 80 & as such ceased to be a cardinal elector. He was created in February 1998 by John Paul II.

June 29, 2024: ❽ USA Cardinal SeánPatrick O’Malley (80), Metropolitan Archbishop of Boston, turned 80 & as such ceased to be a cardinal elector. He was created in March 2006 by Benedict XVI. Despite turning 80, he will remain papabile into the first half of 2025.

June 8, 2024: ❽ Canadian Cardinal Marc Ouellet (80), Prefect Emeritus, Dicastery for Bishops, turned 80 & as such ceased to be a cardinal elector. He was created in Oct. 2003 by John Paul II. He had the 4th (joint-)longest tenure of the current electors. Up until mid-April 2024, when he was convicted by a French court, be remained papabile despite his age — & would have done so into 2025.

May 30, 2024: Dominican Cardinal Kelvin Edward Felix (91), Archbishop Emeritus of Castries (Saint Lucia) passed away (in Saint Lucia). He was created in 2014 by Francis when he was already 81. So, he was never an elector. In December 20214, the government of Saint Lucia issued two stamps to honor their new cardinal. See below.


May 25, 2024: Cardinal Jean-Claude Hollerich (65), Archbishop of Luxembourg, in an interview with the French newspaper ‘La Croix‘, condemned ‘rich societies’ of ‘killing unborn children’ and cautioned that history will judge them.

May 24, 2024: Burmese Cardinal Charles Maung Bo (75), Archbishop of Yangon, in a newspaper interview stressed the “unprecedented state of turmoil and suffering” in Myanmar since 2021.

May 23, 2024: Prefect for the Dicastery for the Doctrine of Faith, Argentine Cardinal Víctor Manuel Fernández (61), met with Pope Tawadros II, Pope of Alexandria and the head of the Coptic Orthodox Church, in Cairo, Egypt, to discuss the Coptic churches prevailing uneasiness as to Fiducia supplicans (i.e., the blessing of same-sex couples).

May 21, 2024: Vatican Canonical inquiry finds no evidence of misconduct on the part of Canadian Cardinal Gérald C. Lacroix (66), Archbishop of Quebec & Primate of Canada, who had been accused, anonymously, of inappropriate sexual contact with a 17-year old girl in 1987 & 1988.

May 21, 2024: Secretary of State, Italian Cardinal Pietro Parolin (69), states that the Vatican would like to establish a permanent office in China (in an effort to enhance the Church’s relations with Beijing. He indicated that the Vatican has been hoping, for a long time, to enjoy a stable presence in China.

May 20, 2024: The pope accepted the resignation of Ivory Coast Cardinal Jean-Pierre Kutwa (78), as the Archbishop of Abidjan.

May 20, 2024: Cardinal Jean-Claude Hollerich (65), Archbishop of Luxembourg, in an interview with a Swiss Catholic publication, opined that the Church’s position on female clerics was not set in stone.

May 17, 2024: Pope Francis has appointed filipino Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle (66), Pro-Prefect, Dicastery for Evangelization, as his special envoy to the ‘National Eucharistic Congress‘ being held in Indianapolis, U.S., July 17–21. Link to ‘CNA‘.

May 14, 2024: German Cardinal Gerhard Ludwig Müller (76), Prefect Emeritus of the Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith (2012 — 2017), in an interview with German online publication ‘kath.net’, stated that: “communism … is atheism at its core”.
