(My) ‘Navajo’ Get Some Good News Re. Water Rights, BUT Still A Long Way To Go.

As you can see from photo above, last year the Supreme Court dealt my Navajo a grievous blow re. water rights. I did do a post about it.

This latest news re. water rights is a much welcome & needed step in the right direction. A small but significant victory. Still a long way to do. But, it makes me HAPPY. I have special empathy for the Navajo. I can relate to them. Decent, good people, unlike some other tribes!

Just two pictures from my 2019 visit to ‘Canyon de Chelly‘ showing how DRY Navajo country is & how it affects everything, including the poor, feral horses.

Starting with my first visit to Arizona in 1980, I have spent a LOT of time on ‘Navajo‘ reservations — including over 5 multi-day stays at ‘Canyon de Chelly‘ (still my favorite place in the WHOLE WORLD).

I have a particular & special affinity with the Navajo — the Diné.

I can relate to them & many of them relate to I. Some even say I look Navajo & could pass as one. I have spent a lot of time with them, trying to get to know them. They are lovely, gentle people. I feel so bad as to how they are downtrodden. This is another, inexcusable, blow. The Supreme Court is so arrogant. Nothing little, insignificant ‘I’ can do.

I will just leave you with. A video I was so fortunate in being able to record. A Navajo Morning Prayer.

The ‘West Indies’ Cricket Team Is An Anachronism. No Need Now. Throw The Bums Out Of The ICC.

They no longer can play cricket, especially Test cricket. They proved it again, this week, with their amazingly inept performance at (my beloved) “Lord’s”. They are a disgrace to International cricket.

They are not a cohesive, unified team — & NOW never will be. You can’t play for a country that doesn’t exist. A fake country. That is my WHOLE point. There is NO country called the ‘West Indies‘ — never have been & never will be.

All the other ICC teams represent a COUNTRY.

The West Indies is NOT a country.

That is why they play like pillocks. Yes, it did NOT used to be like & I speak of one who has a son named after ‘SIR Gordon Greenidge‘. But, now they have quite literally LOST IT. No identity. No team spirit. Time to kick them out.

Very simple. Only genuine, bona fide countries belong in the ICC.

Pow Wows Makes Me SAD!

I guess I am getting too sentimental & philosophical in my undoubted old age.

I have been going to Pow Wows for quite a few years — and have been to quite a few in both New Hampshire & Maine.

But, I have come to realize and appreciate that they make me SAD!

Yes, it is because I do have an affinity to American Indians (though in the last year some of my ‘feelings’ have changed  when it comes to at least one tribe in Maine). Since 1980 I have tried to spend as much time as I can in reservations, in Arizona & Maine, trying to get to know some ‘locals’. I am very fond of the ‘Navajos‘. Something about them. They still have bearing and pride.

So, what is it about Pow Wows that make me sad. It is primarily the IRONY.

The regalia, traditions and dancing represents what they have, for centuries, believed to be their ‘power’. The things that would protect them. Obviously, they didn’t. I, more than most, know the depravations and degradations inflicted on the natives by the Europeans. But, still THEY DANCE. They pay homage to the elders up there. All good. But, it crosses my mind that it never did them any good — over the last 300 years.

Plus, especially in New Hampshire & southern Maine I am not convinced that even 40% of those taking part in the Pow Wows have even 25% Indian in them! Yes, I have talked to some about that.

Just makes me sad. Plus, their health. That distresses me know end. I won’t even talk about their teeth. All sad. Sad. I wish things were different.

When I Was 7 Years Old — Pictures From 1960.

My (adoptive) parents & my maternal grandmother (who raised me).
My maternal grandmother and I. She was the MOST IMPORTANT person in my life. She brought me up. I called her ‘Ambili Amma‘ (Moon Mother). First words I spoke. Changed my life.
You can get a glimpse of my father’s large library through the French windows. My mother, an expert cake maker made these 3D cakes. This wasn’t her fanciest.
The sign on the bike says ’60’ (I think). That is my mother’s youngest sister, who lived with us — as did my grandmother. You can see our ‘Borgward’ in the car porch

As I have already spoken about & POSTED, I got an Epson FastFoto 680W so I could start digitizing my childhood pictures (or what I still have left). I already posted the 1st batch from 1953. These were the very first COLOR photos. I think they are from 1960 — judging from sign on the bike and the candles on the cake. I could, as ever, be wrong. Could be BOTH 1959 + 1960. C’est la vie.

‘Are You Native?’ — I Haven’t Been Asked That In 40 Years.

Wow. I got asked that, this Sunday, at the ‘Mt. Kearsarge’ Pow Wow. They were going to give me free entry. Funny thing is that I had joked about it when I had seen that Native Americans got free entrance. Despite that I was taken back. WOW. Yes, I was probably the only 100% brown person there. SMILE.

In the early 1980s, when I was 40lbs heavier (& as such had a very FAT face), folks in Arizona just assumed I was ‘Navajo‘. I used to spend a fair amount of time on reservations and they thought I was native.

A few years ago, while I was still heavier, while visiting my BELOVED ‘Canyon de Chelly‘, I was told by Navajos that I would never get stopped if I entered the Canyon without a permit. ‘You look like one of us‘.

But, now I am not as fat I did not think I could pass as a native. Neat.

Not sure I want to be thought of as a LOCAL native!

I have a BOND with the Navajo. Though I KNOW more local natives I still don’t have the same degree of affinity! SMILE.
